2023 BMW i7

Overview

Where Mercedes-Benz goes, so goes arch-rival BMW—and vice-versa. Now that Mercedes-Benz has introduced its electric S-class, the EQS, it’s no surprise that BMW is preparing to launch an all-electric flagship luxury sedan called the i7. The electric Bimmer, based heavily on the upcoming, new-generation, gasoline-powered 7-series, will go on sale in the fall of 2022. Although few details have yet been released, the i7 will undoubtedly offer at least two electric motors and a battery pack large enough to compete with the EQS and other high-end electric sedans, such as the Tesla Model S and the Lucid Air. During a test drive of a prototype model, BMW told us to expect a similar powertrain and battery setup as the iX SUV, so around 300 miles of driving range per charge is likely. We expect more sedate styling than the recently debuted XM SUV concept but, based on spy photos, we can see a few design elements that should make the 2023 BMW i7 a handsome entrant into the EV market.

What’s New for 2023?

The i7 will serve as the flagship of BMW’s expanding “i” sub-brand of electric vehicles when it gets launched as a 2023 model.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

BMW hasn’t yet said what trims will be offered or how much they will cost, but we expect the i7 to be offered in normal and sporty configurations, with prices starting in the low six-figure range.

EV Motor, Power, and Performance

Since we’ve been told to expect a similar setup in the i7 to that found in BMW’s electric iX SUV, we will likely see a dual-motor propulsion system with 500-plus horsepower. That should also mean standard all-wheel drive and enough grunt to keep up with rival luxury sedans. During our drive of a prototype model in Germany, we noted its particularly smooth ride and a whisper-quiet cabin. The i7 won’t attract buyers looking for sports-sedan handling, but those seeking a comfortable and luxurious experience will find much to like. If you’d prefer a gasoline-powered 7-series, one is still available; we review that model separately.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

Going by the iX’s current battery and driving range estimates, the i7 should offer a driving range of around 300 miles per charge. BMW hasn’t released specific details yet, but we’ll update this story when we hear more.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The i7 will borrow one more thing from the iX, and that’s the SUV’s large floating digital gauge and infotainment displays. Sandwiched together under a single pane of glass, the two displays offer a clear look at driving data and entertainment features. There will also be a new rear-seat entertainment system, which utilizes a large 31-inch screen that drops from the ceiling and can access streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube via the car’s 5G cellular connection.
