What rights does a person have if their employer coverage is terminated for non-payment

This is a very long story but I will only mention the pertinent details.

I had health insurance provided by my employer in a group plan.

My employer did not pay the bill, and the coverage was terminated retroactively.

For a period of two months, I was using my health insurance with no indication that anything was wrong. My first indication that something was wrong was multiple providers calling me and telling me their claims were denied and coming back coverage terminated.

Finally I received a letter from the insurance company, notifying me of the retroactive cancellation.

I have been told by the insurance company that there is no COBRA because the group was terminated. The plan I purchased on the health exchange was effective the first of June.

I have a pile of claims for the two months between my new plan and the terminated plan.

This seems completely unfair to me that I should be left without the ability to purchase coverage for this time period. The health exchange only allows coverage to begin on the first of the month after the application is submitted. It was impossible for me to submit an application prior to my loss of coverage, because my coverage was terminated retroactively.

I have spent hours on the phone with both the insurance company and the health exchange and I am told there is nothing that can be done.

Is there any federal law giving me the right to purchase retroactive health insurance in this situation?
