Was recently laid off and just began new job. Looking for help navigating employer subsidized COBRA as part of severance and new insurance scenarios

Background: I was laid off on June 30th and part of severance was that the company would cover the insurance for both my spouse and me for 6 months (until December 31st) via completely paying for COBRA. I just started a new job and the enrollment period is July through June (I had hoped their health plan would start in January since that would have avoided this conundrum). If I join my new work’s insurance plan, I will have to drop COBRA coverage for both my spouse and myself and she would join her own job’s health insurance via special enrollment.

Problem: My spouse has a particular health problem that is only covered by my former employer’s insurance and not by either of our current employer’s insurances and we would like to stay on my former employer’s insurance for as long as possible.

Possible Outcomes: We could stay on our subsidized COBRA until year end when my spouse gets back on to her work’s health insurance on January 1st. However, that would leave me uninsured from January of 2023 until July 2030 when my work’s open enrollment period begins. One possible option we have discussed is purchasing a health insurance plan from the marketplace for January through June. My understanding is that you can drop marketplace coverage if you get access to coverage through work. A cursory search on healthcare.gov puts the premium at ~$200 to $400 a month and we could potentially pay that for myself for 6 months and then join my employer’s HI when the next enrollment period begins. Another option is to pay for COBRA from my old employer (for just myself) from January – June, but that will likely be expensive.

Questions: Does anyone have insight/experience with a situation like this? Are there any pitfalls to be aware of? Is it true I can drop marketplace coverage when I need to? What would you do to get the most benefit without spending too much on healthcare?
