Universal Insurance? Or something like it?
Hello! I am a first time writer, long time reader of Reddit through the TikTok videos. I have a very unique set of circumstances, so I thought “what better place than reddit?”.
I (19f) just finished my first year of college (in the us), and attended a university out of state. As A result of this, I had to change my health insurance to that of the schools’. Now, for the problem. I have decided to take a gap year from my studies as I just need a break from the burnout I am facing. As a result of this, I am no longer enrolled in school and no longer qualify for this insurance. I am taking this gap as a student taking a break from school, with plans to return to my studies in the coming fall.
For my gap, I have found an Au Pair job in Europe that I am leaving for in a few weeks. I will be staying on a tourist visa (90 days), and possibly go to other countries in the world after that. This could possibly go on for a year, maybe more, maybe less. All the while, I will be traveling home back to the states at different times throughout the year. I am worried about coverage for my stateside needs on a routine basis (as emergency care is taken care of in Europe).
I am also on different medications that I have been on for over a decade. As of now, I have a three months supply of each med, but what happens when I run out? What happens if I come back stateside and need to get a routine checkup? Are there any insurance programs that could possibly cover me throughout for basic medical and pharmaceutical care?
All in all, I just don’t really know what I need to be looking for in terms of care, or even what options are out there for me. I am just looking for some guidance on the matter and I really appreciate any knowledge you can pass along!
