Uninsured since October 2022 (was living abroad with foreign insurance), returning to US (New York Resident)

Hey all,

First time poster. Me and my wife's insurance US lapsed at the end of September 2022. We moved to Spain on a student visa from September 2022-May 2023 to do a program that provided us with full health insurance in Spain, so there was no need for us to have US insurance.

We're returning to the US (our home is in New York) next month (June 2023) and were wondering, will be able to apply for/be eligible for medicaid in New York? Neither of us will have jobs lined up (I'm starting grad school in August) and my wife will do freelance work (no guarantee of income).

Any thoughts here? If not medicaid, are there decent options in the NYS marketplace that are moderately affordable? I've seen friends talk about marketplace plans that are absurdly expensive for pretty garbage plans. We're totally new to this game (we've luckily almost always been covered by our jobs in the past).

Many thanks for any help!
