Travel insurance help – sent hospital bill for $20000

Hi

When I was on honeymoon to Florida this year I unfortunately took unwell and had to be taken by ambulance to a hospital. My wife dealt with the insurer at the time and apart from paying an excess while lying in the hospital bed from a finance side of things everything seemed to be ok. The hospital checked my insurance while I was there and said it was fine.

I was discharged from hospital early the next morning and was able to continue the holiday – albeit feeling terrible.

2 months later I am now back in the UK. A claims resolution specialist for the hospital has contacted me. She says that my insurer denied the hospitals claims as non covered services and has said I can discuss with her a payment plan for the money I owe.

I had travel insurance purchased from the moment I booked the holiday. It offered worldwide coverage – including USA. It also include medical emergencies. I’ve never heard anything from the travel insurer about this. As far as I knew this issue was covered. I’m stumped as to why I am not covered for the treatment needed. If my illness happened in the UK I would have went to hospital. I did not do that lightly, especially with it being a honeymoon. I followed the doctor’s advice while in hospital.

Does anyone have any advice. I’ve contacted my travel insurer by email to complain but await a reply.

I live in Scotland if that makes a difference.

My illness has nothing to do with sports / extreme activities as well.

Thanks
