Thousands of dollars in medical bill, what can I do
In August of last year I went into the hospital for an emergency. They took me in and did an emergency surgery which removed part of my leg. In recovery, I was told I didn’t have insurance anymore. Since June of the year. I was completely devastated. I tried to apply for medi-cal but was denied. I though emergency medical would help but no one ever got back to me. I got covered califronia but it wasn’t retroactive. But I needed to continue receiving care after and I tried hard to continue getting retroactive coverage but was denied due to making too much at the time. I lost my job and had to move back in with my folks and finally got approved for medical after 2 months but was still denied retroactive because I had made too much at the time of the emergency. I never got a bill for the full amount again, just a bunch of other bills that were reduced. I never even got a letter of cancelation either when I went in. Now, I went into my hospital account after getting a bill for a little over 100 dollars and saw that my balance is 38,000+. I don’t know what to do and am terrified. Do I just declare bankruptcy? Please help. Edit: I am 31m. Currently make about 1500 a month. At the time I made over 2k. In California.
