Switching insurances and a medication will no longer be covered.
I’ve been on Nurtec ODT as needed for 2.5 years. I am hoping to switch insurance companies in a few months (going from BCBS under COBRA to Aetna with Caremark pharmacy benefits with my employer). It seems Nurtec will be non-formulary with any plan I get with my employer. I have a few problems with that:
(A) it is over $1,000 for 8 tablets with GoodRx. It would last me about 2 months but it’s still a lot of money.
(B) I have tried and failed alternatives for this medication. I tried 4 triptans (Imitrex in 2 forms, eletriptan, and rizatriptan) and Ubrelvy and they worsened my vertigo and really did not help the migraine. I’m unsure if there are other alternatives out there to take on an as needed basis. I already take 2 medications daily for prevention, it’s really just the abortive meds that I struggle with. One of my daily medications won’t be covered either but it’s only $40 on GoodRx for 90 days so I can deal with that. (PS: if any other migraine sufferers out there know of an abortive, please share).
So I guess I’m wondering, is it even worth trying to get a formulary exemption, especially since I’ve been on the medication for so long? Also, is there anything else I can do to try and get this approved?
I’m sorta indifferent if there’s nothing to do. I keep telling myself I’ll just suffer without it as I’ll be saving a ton of money by not paying for the COBRA, but I know it won’t be easy without it.
