Stuck with bills because my previous employer never cancelled my insurance.

I left my previous job in December 2023 and assumed my insurance through Capital Blue Cross would be terminated as of December 31. Turns out they didn't cancel it until May 31, which is not surprising; things were very messy when I left. I started using my new insurance, Highmark Blue Shield, on January 1, and everything went through just fine. However, Highmark found out about it recently and is now denying all of my claims that were billed prior to June 1, saying that they are secondary to Capital BC. My therapist's office made me aware of this last week. Today, I got a call from them saying that four of the eight claims they resubmitted to Highmark had been denied due to them being too old to rebill, and they are expecting me to pay out of pocket for them. I'm assuming it will be the same for my medical and pharmacy claims. Do I have any recourse here? I don't think it's fair that I should have to pay for my previous employer's incompetence, but then again I know that insurance companies aren't required to play fair.

ETA: I'm 36, live in Pennsylvania, and make $67k/year.
