Spouse has State Insurance, need help with Primary vs Secondary Coverage

Hi all,

I currently have an HDHP plan with an HSA at my employer. Currently on single plan, deductible is $2500. Costs me roughly $140/mo.

My spouse has a new job with a state government and is looking at a PPO family plan with Aetna. There would be small copays for routine visits, but only an $800 deductible and OOP max of $17,400. Monthly cost for this plan is fairly cheap at less than $70/mo. There are 2 other free plans but with higher deductibles.

She was trying to enroll me on her plan but because my employer offers health insurance, I can only use her insurance for secondary coverage. If we were to follow through with my enrollment, what would this secondary coverage mean to me? Would it be beneficial? My spouse will go with a family plan regardless to cover our son, just unsure what it means for me to be added for secondary coverage. Apparently I can’t just drop mine, I would need some sort of form proving I’m not eligible for health insurance in order to be placed on hers for primary coverage.

Thank you!
