Specialist keeps billing wrong insurance despite being given correct info – now threatening to send bill to collections

My wife saw an ENT almost a year ago – a routine follow up office visit after some surgery. The surgery was covered by insurance company A.

During the time of the office visit, my wife was covered by insurance company B. We provided them this info at the time.

A few weeks after the visit, my wife started a new job and we have since been insured under insurance company C. That's not really relevant, just fun lore for the incident.

Anyway, the specialist is not billing company B! They are billing A I think, which will not cover the visit (understandably, as we were not insured by A). The office is then sending the full bill to us. We've provided them the correct insurance information several times, over the phone and in writing via MyChart, and they simply refuse to get it right. This has happened probably 5-6 times at this point, for almost a year.

At this point we are feeling very annoyed – we have tried everything to help this office bill correctly, and they seem to make the same mistake again and again. We are obviously not paying the 1600 they are trying to charge us because they can't do their paperwork correctly.

What recourse do we have here to get the specialist's office to figure their shit out and get it right? Is there any way to dispute this as a debt if it gets sent to a collection agency?
