Should I let my debt go to collections?

I was assaulted and had to go to the ER in WI, I’m from IL. When I got there I gave the front desk my insurance card and asked the lady if they are a preferred provider and accepted my insurance she said yes. Its the same organization that I go to when I’m home in IL. Didn’t think much of it until I got my bill and everything is out of network and turns out they don’t accept my insurance. So I’m stuck with a $3500 bill that should of been around 800 with my copay. I talked to the hospital and they said that it’s my job to figure out if they take my insurance not theirs but offered me a 15% discount for their misinformation… I didn’t go there expecting to pay nothing but being mislead doesn’t sit well. I’d rather just settle with them and pay what I would of paid for insurance. Otherwise I was thinking about letting it go to collections and settling with them. I have a perfect credit score so I’m not trying to let it get to that point but don’t have $3500 laying around to give to them. Any suggestions?
