Should I get Health Insurance, if I only really want it for 1 problem?

It’s not 100% certain I may need some procedure, but in order to be certain, some semi-expensive tests need to be done, in order to verify for certain what the real issue is. From what I’ve been told, it’s most likely I’ll need ulnar release surgery, and I’m also told the pricing could go above $5000. I haven’t been on health insurance since about 9 months ago, then it ended because of my age. So I’m not honestly very sure how health insurance all works. I know I never had to pay a dime for pretty much anything under my parents, except for copays with visits to doctors. I don’t know if getting insurance would help with the cost or not, and if I would need it a certain amount of time first or not. My parents plan had a $2000 deductible.. meaning 2000 out of pocket, then the benefits kick in pretty much for the rest of the year.

I don’t know if insurance on the market is anything like that. My parents insurance was from work. My job offers no special health insurance plan.. just a link to some health insurance market for lower income people. My credit is absolutely crap, so I probably wouldn’t get approved for some special healthcare credit loan thing. Oh yeah, I’d probably only want the insurance for this one issue then drop it altogether. If that would work of course.

If the insurance would end up being possibly more expensive than the potential cost of my issue, I guess I could save up money over a year, and just pay out of pocket then.
