Seeking urgent medical and insurance advice for my brother
I am seeking some urgent and desperate medical/insurance advice for my older brother (age 28). My family is not knowledgeable of insurance or surgeries so we are very much in a serious situation.
My older brother had a tragic accident last month and fell directly on his chin, breaking his jaw in multiple places, lost several teeth, and all his teeth are now misaligned.
Unfortunately, he also lost his job for some months prior and his insurance also expired around October, right before this accident happened in November. So he is currently paying out of pocket for the surgery that wired his jaw shut. He has immediately enrolled in some sort of Obamacare plan but that only covers until the end of December (at the end of December, he should be getting surgery to get his jaw unwired, which I understand to be covered).
However, my mom has done some research and as we understand it, no dental insurance we found will cover the dental work that will be required (implants, realigning etc), and also no medical insurance (obamacare as my brother is unemployed) will be accepted by the jaw specialists required for the jaw related surgeries. This is where we seek the most advice. Does anyone know if it’s possible to buy private insurance that will cover the needed dental/medical surgeries for someone who is unemployed? My brother lives in the Columbus, OH area.
If it’s not possible, is the only option to pay entirely out of pocket for these procedures? My family is middle class, but we would be willing to pay for a good surgeon with good reviews if this is going to not be covered by insurance regardless. My brother is dear to me and his passion is cooking/eating so this is honestly heartbreaking, we want to get him healthy. Any advice will be greatly appreciated since we aren’t knowledgeable in this area. I have always used insurance provided by my employer so Obamacare is especially unknown to me, and I don’t know if it’s possible to buy into insurance like Aetna without going through an employer.
