Same service, cost varying by a factor

I have done two meniscus repair procedures. One was on my right knee, one was on my left. Before the operation, each knee had an MRI done. For one such MRI, I was billed $80 as a copay. For another MRI, which had the same exact ICD-10 code and description, I was billed over $2,000, with insurance picking up about 60% of that. The hospital, where the second MRI was done, sent me a bill for the remainder which is close to $800.

I disagreed with the hospital assessment and sent them a letter explaining my position, also showing that this particular hospital is known for overcharging for the same procedures by 2.6 times, making it the most expensive hospital in the state.

The hospital never responded, but kept sending me the bill. After a while, the bill was sent to the collection agency, and I am on the hook for those same $800.

What's the right course of action for me? The same loaf of bread cannot cost 10 times more at a different store….

Thank you in advance!
