Removing partner when resigning job
I'm planning to leave my job in July and then go on COBRA August 1 and take a break for a few months. My employer covers partners 99% so I added my partner to cover a few months' gap in employment for him – he actually has a summer job without benefits now.
However, we broke up recently. My employer doesn't require marriage or legal partnership as long as you live together to cover partners so there's not documentation to submit for divorce. Latest he'll have new coverage from his fulltime job is September 1st and can submit documentation of the new coverage then to remove him, but is the termination of my employment sufficient as a QLE to remove him as of August 1 if we want?
I guess I could ask him to sign up for an exchange-based insurance for August and submit documentation for it. One of my frustrations in the relationship was communicating about logistics and money so I'm a little reticent to rely on documentation from him to take him off but I can probably get it done with enough arm-twisting.
Thanks!
