Received medical bill over a year later (Employer-provided insurance, Maine.)

In September 2023, I had an ultrasound ordered by my gynecologist to check IUD placement. In November 2023, I got bills for what my insurance wouldn’t cover for the radiology doctor ($90) and the hospital ($60.)

Yesterday, I got a bill for $2,000 from the hospital for the ultrasound. I called the hospital billing and they said my insurance audited the bill and determined it should have come out of my deductible, and that the hospital billing only just got the determination in late September 2024.

My employer changed insurance providers in 2024, and I can no longer log into the portal where all the EOBs are. But I called my old insurance, and they said that they did determine it should have come out of my deductible, but that they sent that determination to the hospital in early October 2023, so the hospital must have waited a year to send the bill to me.

Questions: Is there a time limit on medical billing? Do I have any other recourse here?

Thanks for your help!
