Really anxious, need some guidance as I think I messed up and was mislead! CoveredCA. Started new job that offers "affordable" employer-sponsored plan, I did not get off of my insurance through CoveredCA in time, I declined the insurance through my employer. What do I do now?

Hello,

A few years ago I was at job A, the premiums went up a bit to a point that it was no longer affordable in my view. I couldn’t find the exact details on eligibility from the CoveredCA (CCA) website, so my wife called and the rep’s were also not sure, but ultimately we felt it was okay to sign up for coverage through the site. FastForward a few years later, I just got a new job about 4months ago, my life was hectic with 2 young kids and I didn’t get around to comparing many of the details between my existing insurance through CCA, and the insurance at new job B. I declined enrolling in my employer-sponsored insurance because it didn’t cover as much as what I was getting through the state, but now that my wife and I are going through the process of renewing our CCA plan, I see a question about employer-sponsored insurance and it’s freaking us out.

What’s the best way to approach this? We weren’t trying to commit fraud or anything, we tried calling several times before initially signing up because we were just really trying to prioritize our health, and reduce costs since our family was just starting. My main concerns are that the IRS or somebody is going to try and make us pay back premiums. What about the doctor appointments and everything else we had done while under the CCA plan?

We’re planning on calling them to try and make sense of all this, but I don’t trust the person on the phone will have our best interests in mind.
