Provider Charging More Than Actual Cost of Lab Services
My provider is running some labs that aren't covered by my insurance because they're deemed "experimental." The provider requires advance payment for my self-pay portion: $4,500 ($2,900 for a biopsy done at their facility, and $1,600 lab fees). I've done a lot of research and know the amount they're charging for the lab fees is way higher than the actual cost. The lab said if the provider will allow it, then I can pay them the actual cost directly. The provider said they won't allow that – it's not their policy and they can't make exceptions. Also, their biopsy charge is higher than the local going rate. Unfortunately the procedure is time sensitive, so I don't have the luxury of price shopping and switching providers at this point.
Is the provider allowed to bill me for more than the actual cost of the lab fees? Any advice on how to get these costs down?
