Previous Employer Cancelled COBRA Coverage Without Notifying

Hello I’m a bit new here and really struggling with insurance related issues. My pharmacist let me know Our COBRA United Healthcare plan suddenly stopped working late through the month of April while my wife and i were dealing with some major medical care issues.

When I checked the website they had already took my payment and said I was enrolled through April much like my doctor’s have been confirming. Turns out my previous employer cancelled the insurance plan in March and did not notify me and United Healthcare. United Health care told me they never heard anything and it was my previous employers responsibility to notify them. I had to engage with my old employer and spend weeks trying to get in touch with their insurance broker who basically said it was a mistake and offered new much worse insurance that we denied essentially putting us without insurance covered for April that even on the insurance portal said we’re covered for. United just recently fixed it and refunded us but it appears no one is taking responsibility for essentially giving me and my doctor’s the impression I’m covered through April.

Fast forward to today and now I’m getting the bills for April uncovered at an immense cost. This seems absolutely insane and not sure if there is anything I can do. How could United take my money, tell me and my doctor’s were covered and then essentially say it’s a mistake retroactively after receiving much needed care? Is there anything I can do?
