Planning Ahead for my S/O’s Medi-Cal Application

Hello everyone, I wanted to evaluate options for my partner, as they will be turning 26 early next year and will be removed from their family member's Kaiser plan. The current route will be to apply to Medi-Cal to extend the coverage through Kaiser, as they allow this if you were an existing Kaiser patient within 12 months (or something like that).

For their income, they only work a day or two a week at a retail job to have a bit of spare cash while they are going to Grad School. By my calculations, their income is below the 138% poverty line outlined on the BenefitsCal site, but I wanted to make sure a few things were cleared up for me first.

Student loans do not count towards this income, as they are debt, correct? The BenefitsCal site asks for all student aid, including loans, but I want to make sure this does not disqualify them. They were claimed by their mother on their taxes this year, but will not be for next year. Will this cause any expected issues?

I ran through the application online, and it seems straightforward with providing income statements and proof of identity, but I want to make sure there are no curve balls for them come next year.
