Pharmacy refuses to fill prescription without insurance [NJ]
I had spinal surgery about 11 days ago. I had a prescription for Oxycodone that ran out. I am being weaned off of it but my doctor wants to refill it one time.
The problem is, I had health insurance through work. I am between jobs as of a month ago, however I extended my health insurance through COBRA since I knew I needed this surgery. What I didn’t know is that my COBRA extension doesn’t cover prescription drugs. That is a separate payment which I would need to pay directly to my former employer. My prescription insurance expired 5/31.
I am in a lot of pain right now, and would like to refill the prescription ASAP. I have no problem paying out of pocket, however all the nearby pharmacies are saying they will not fill an opioid prescription for someone without prescription insurance. They said it doesn’t matter if I’m willing to pay out of pocket. They don’t fill any narcotic prescriptions if you don’t have prescription insurance.
It’s Saturday and I wouldn’t even be able to contact my former employer until Monday, and god knows when they’d take care of reinstating my prescription plan. And I kind of need the pain relief now. The premium is also way more than I would pay out of pocket for any of these meds. Does anyone know what options I have?
