No Health Insurance, ER visit, Medicaid/Charity Care

Hi guys. My brother got admitted into the hospital a week ago for a brain injury from an ATV accident. I’m assuming he will be in the hospital for another few days to another week.. Generally ATV’s are not required to have insurance nor does he have health insurance.

He physically is not in the right state of mind to sign any paperwork when they came into the room today to speak with him. They contacted me to apply for charity care within the hospital and then met up with someone else at a different office in the hospital to sign an affidavit & begin the process for charity care for him. After I signed the affidavit, he said “we can get the ball rolling with charity care”.

They said that we first need to apply for Medicaid and if they send a packet in the mail to send further information. I’m unsure if he will be denied or accepted for temporary Medicaid coverage.

With that said, is there anybody who has gone through the process of charity care/Medicaid? Do we need to wait for a determination from Medicaid to be granted charity care? Is it dependent on if Medicaid will accept or deny him? Will the people dealing with charity care be notified? They didn’t mention anything about bringing any letters or forms back to them?

Anybody who has experience with this process and can provide clarity would be appreciated. Located in NJ. Thank you!
