Newborn screening (part of 2 week newborn well visit) is $200 out of pocket. – United Healthcare

I have United Healthcare, and just received a statement from my pediatrician for $200 that insurance would not cover. Called UHC customer service and the representative I talked to told me that the code 3626240 – Mass spec, was not a preventative service which is why I would have to pay out of pocket. I called the pediatrician to ensure they only charged me for a preventative service, and they tell me I am being charged because I haven’t met my deductible. This is kid number 4, and I have never paid for the newborn screen/heel prick. The only thing I can think of is that I did it in the hospital lab (which is protocol for pediatrician who won’t do it in office), but I have done it in the hospital lab prior to this with no out of pocket expense.

(No I didn’t hit my out of pocket max for the year despite having a 2 week old. I went to an out of network birth center which is an entirely different insurance woe that I am currently trying to appeal.)
