New Patient health care bill – MN

I just moved to MN from Texas. I made an appointment with Allina Healthcare which was in network. There were no doctors available, so my appointment was with a resident. I’ve usually paid anywhere from $50-$150 for a general PCP visit, and 1$50-$250 for a specialist visit in Dallas. I have kept the same anthem BCBS insurance from Texas to MN. But after my doctor’s appointment in MN, I was billed $580 after insurance (insurance only covered $85), for my general doctor new patient visit. This was not a specialist or anything. I didn’t even see the doctor, it was a resident that I ended up seeing. I am so shocked by this bill. How is it that they’re charging <$500 to see a doctor? I’m not sure what to do. I called my insurance after I received the bill, and they said that was the code the provider charged, and because I didn’t reach my deductible I have to pay it. Even the insurance lady was surprised that it was so high for a doctor visit, but she said the provider can essentially charge whatever they want for the visit… Does healthcare in MN just suck? How is it drastically so much more expensive than it was in Texas.

Are there any policies that providers need to let me see the upfront costs? I would have never gone to them knowing they would bill me <$500, I would’ve just gone to the minutecare at CVS at that point…

I read about asking for an itemized bill from the provider and an EOB from the insurance. But what else?

Is there a cash amount that I can pay and not go through my insurance? I’m not sure but I don’t have $580 to pay for one doctor appointment. Now I never want to see the doctor anymore.
