New insurance – $900 mammogram

I’m pretty clueless when it comes to insurance. Fortunate that I’m not in a dire situation so just looking to see if I’m overlooking something obvious.

I’m high risk for breast cancer and there are a couple of masses we have been tracking. We essentially alternate between ultrasound and diagnostic mammogram. We did try going back to a regular mammogram but it was not sufficient.

I was laid off in March from my job I’d been with 15 years. Large company, BCBS. My out of pocket was usually around $400.

I was fortunate to get another job lined up very fast. Smaller but good company and from everything I’ve seen provides really well for its employees. When I signed up for insurance I went with the plans that HR said was the most popular. That’s about the extent I know. I got pretty overwhelmed trying to make sense of the details. Anyway, now with UHC. Scheduled my appointment and my out of pocket was going to be over $900.

I canceled my appointment. I’m working under the assumption I have a high deductible and I should just reschedule the appointment in January.

Am I overlooking anything else I should be considering?
