Need Help Navigating Prenatal Insurance for My Partner (Non-U.S. Citizen, OPT Visa) in California
Hi everyone,
I’m a U.S. citizen living in California, and my partner (25 years old) is about 5 weeks pregnant. She’s not a U.S. citizen—she’s here on an OPT visa, working, and making around $80,000 before taxes. We’re trying to figure out prenatal insurance options, but it’s been really confusing and feels like our choices are limited.
From what I understand, she likely doesn’t qualify for Medi-Cal or MCAP because of her income. At the same time, if she were to quit her job due to the pregnancy, that could compromise her OPT visa status and potentially interfere with her eligibility as a “lawfully present immigrant” for Covered California coverage.
This pregnancy was unplanned and now we’re planning to get married soon, but I’m not sure how that factors into this timeline. We need insurance ASAP, and I know the green card process can take a while, so that’s not an immediate solution.
Does anyone have experience with a situation like this? I’m honestly feeling overwhelmed 🙁 Any advice on navigating prenatal insurance for someone in her situation? We’d really appreciate any insights! Thanks in advance. 🙏
