So we live in NY and earlier this year, my mom got kicked out of medicaid because she worked too much the year prior. My brother and I still use her insurance since we are under 26. She was able to get a marketplace instead but the expenses have been tremendous. Asides the monthly payment she makes for the insurance, my brother goes to the hospital a lot (about 5 times or more a month), and also has medications which he takes. The bills after the insurance coverage is still high and the copay for the medication is another problem. So on a monthly basis my mom spends a lot because of it.

We came up with the idea of my brother and I getting medicaid separately on the next open enrollment date since we are over 18 and we don't earn that much, while my mom remains on the marketplace because she has no choice. My question is, is it a good idea and will it have consequences?

Also i am a bit concerned with how this would affect her when she files taxes because she claims us as dependents (were still college students and earn less than 10k). Does it mean that if my brother and I do get medicaid, she would no longer be able to claim us as dependents?

Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks.
