My son was born 5/26.

On 6/3 I called DHS in PA (they handle state insurance) to determine what I need to do to get him enrolled in the same plan I have for my older son. It’s UPMC for kids. The girl told me it’s as simple as adding a note to add a newborn and she took all his info.

Three weeks later, I received a call from his pediatricians office that he had no insurance info. I said he’s covered under my employer insurance but that I contacted the state. She encouraged me to check again, because his thirty day grace was ending soon.

I called on 6/22. The woman told me I was given misinformation, that I needed to completely reapply. And as long as I reapplied within the 30 day grace period, he could be seen by his doctor. I’d just have to let the pediatrician know he had a “pending CHIP” app and they’d back date it.

His pediatrician called me again. I told them what I was instructed, and I said that he has a pending app. She told me CHIP does not back date. So he needs insurance asap.

Since his app is pending I had to pay out of pocket that day for his 1 month on 6/26. I deferred vaccines to the 2m appointment.

However, the 2m appointment is upon us. His chip app hasn’t updated. I’m getting VERY nervous. He needs these vaccines. God forbid he got a fever and had to go to the ER, he’s uninsured. The 30 days with my employer insurance was over on 6/26.

I called CHIP to press the issue and get his application status. They told me there’s an error on my account, but the woman said it’s a sensitive issue given the fact I’ve been paying out of pocket and he hasn’t been able to get his vaccinations. She assigned a local case worker and I’m currently waiting for that call back.

I don’t know what to do. I want my son to have these vaccines, but I’m scared this is going to cost thousands. I can try to get him in with my employer insurance, but I was going to leave my job once mat leave ends. Plus I don’t want to mess anything up with his current CHIP application where I said he had no insurance!

Can anyone give advice?
