My insurance lapsed because a change in payment portal caused it to not be paid.

I work for a small company and they pay for 100% of our health insurance. We are large enough that they are required to provide it. I’m currently in the middle of a slew of labs and procedures that I need to have done before surgery.

My last procedure would have capped out my deductible and out-of-pocket for the year, but the claim was denied and now they’ve asking me for over $15K out of pocket. After investigating I found that my insurance was cancelled due to nonpayment. My employer determined that the broker they use had this problem with all the companies they provide insurance for with this particular insurer. The insurer had apparently changed payment portals and didn’t inform the broker.

They’re claiming it’ll be fixed in a week from now (I started dealing with this a week ago) and it’ll be as if I never lost insurance. So that denied claim will be approved and I’ll have my deductible and max OOP still.

Does anybody have any experience with this? I’m kind of freaking out right now, this is a critical surgery and I’m right in the middle of trying to get scheduled for what will probably be the final procedure before I actually get scheduled for surgery. Is it even possible that my insurance can be retroactively reinstated? I’ve had a knot in my stomach worrying about this quite a bit. Which is the last thing I need right now. I really can’t afford it uninsured. I can barely afford it insured. And I feel like the medical provider should have called me to schedule the procedure by now, had my insurance not lapsed. So now it’s feeling like I’m persona non grata to them.
