My homeowners insurance denied my hail damaged roof 2x while my conjoined duplex neighbor got hers approved right off the bat, any advice? My partner and I don’t have 10k laying around to use on a roof..

My partner and I bought our first duplex together in Denver in April of 2022. During the inspection process, we were told our roof was relatively new, and have a document showing our roof was completely redone in 2016; SafeCo insurance paid for it.

A couple years after we bought the house (May 2024), we had a horrible hail storm and noticed cracks on our bay window which prompted us to get our insurance company, SafeCo, involved. Our conjoining duplex neighbor also had an inspection done; within a couple of weeks, her insurance company sent a check for a new roof.

Since our duplex neighbor’s was approved, we thought surely SafeCo would do the same for us. SafeCo sent out an inspector on June 15, 2024, the inspector looked at our roof for no more than 5 minutes. Several weeks after the inspector from SafeCo left our house, and still no response to our claim, I reached out to the SafeCo inspector and asked when we’d hear back about the claim. This inspector told us he had no involvement in the approval process. July 8th,2024 we received a denial letter and email.

In disbelief they denied our claim, we appealed the denial and SafeCo sent another agent out in August 2024. At this point we got in contact with a roofing company to help us. Again, the SafeCo inspector looked at our roof no more than 5 minutes and left. SafeCo denied our claim a second time on August 19th 2024. In both denial letters SafeCo admits to seeing hail damage, however, they also state that the inspection “revealed roof to be much older than 6 years… policy does not provide coverage for shingles as the damage is from wear and tear.”

My partner left several voicemails to our property claims specialist from SafeCo and received no calls back. My partner also called the main line and asked to speak to a manager and never received a call back.

We are extremely frustrated by the customer service provided by SafeCo Insurance and we are also genuinely confused why we received two denials, when our conjoining neighbor had no issue getting insurance’s help.

Something is not adding up… between our closing documents stating the roof was replaced in 2016, to our initial inspector when we bought the house mentioning nothing note worthy about the roof being “old”, to SafeCo insurance denying our claims because the roof looks “old” and dodging us.

We pay for homeowners insurance to get some relief for accidents out of our control, like hail damage. We are at a complete loss.

Does anyone know where'd we go from here? I appreciate any/all feedback!
