Medical bills under $500 going to collections won’t affect credit score?

I guess I’m just…. extremely suspicious that that is the case?

I’ve got a situation here that the insurance guy at Aetna claims he hasn’t ever seen in all his years of working there. Succinctly: I had a procedure done two years ago, was billed by all involved parties and everything was paid in full right on time, no surprises, seemed easy enough and put to rest.

Fast forward two years- I just got a bill for $62. The doctor’s office claims Aetna underpaid their anesthesiologist so they reprocessed the claim, and now I magically owe this reworked copay on an amount I never agreed to/knew about, for a procedure that had to my knowledge been paid for, for a mistake that Aetna made. I saw that medical debt under $500, as of this year, will not affect credit reports. So I’m giving them the middle finger, this is not my debt and I don’t want to pay them one red cent. They should have handled this two years ago.

I realize $62 is negligible in comparison to most medical crap in this country. I get it. But it was their mistake, and if I can just toss these bullsh*t bills in the can and it won’t actually hurt me, I’m doing it. Any advice or perspective is welcome.
