Marketplace denied adding newborn to plan after birth due to getting different insurance the following month. Only had 25 hr window.

I just found out I only had a 25 hour window to add my child to our health insurance to cover his NICU stay. My spouse and I had Maryland marketplace coverage (Not Medicaid, paid full amount, BCBS) for the entire year of 2022. We had it set to end December 31st of 2022 and then January 1st 2023 we started with my spouses employers coverage instead. My child was born December 30th at 11:00 p.m. he stayed in the hospital until January 4th 2023 with some time In the NICU (he was a preemie at 34 weeks, emergency C-section). While we have him on the 2023 insurance with the employer when I called to try to get him onto the marketplace insurance so that his 2022 hospital bills will be covered they said since that plan is now canceled there's no way of them opening up the application to add him on to it for those 25 hours of coverage. They can only do it if it was a Medicaid plan, not private. I spoke to multiple people at the marketplace and through the insurance about it and they all kind of repeated the same thing. Has anybody else heard of this? I can not afford an uninsured NICU stay (didn't help either that by being 25 hrs before 2023 I missed out on getting paid maternity leave benefits, but that's a different story) . We don't qualify for Medicaid.
