Mammogram and breast ultrasound laws

A year ago I had my annual mammogram and breast ultrasound (I have dense tissue). The mammogram showed a suspect spot. The dr sent me for a biopsy which was expensive and stressful but thankfully it came back clear. I skipped the follow up mammogram because I knew my insurance would not cover it.

Now I went back for my annual mammogram again and received a huge bill. I called BCBS and they said it was coded wrong. It should have been sent in as “routine” so that it would be covered as my free screening. I called the imaging facility and they said it had to be coded as “diagnostic” now because I had a biopsy and a clip inserted.

I don’t want any issues but I am not sure what if anything I can do to fight this. And will all of my future mammograms be diagnostic now?

ETA: I live in a state that has a law for 1 screening free annually and breast ultrasound to be included at no more than $20. But the key word is “screening”…
