Make too much for Medi-Cal. Make too little for covered California. What a headache.

My wife and I are live-in care providers for my grandmother through a combination of California’s IHSS and WCPS programs. We make somewhere between 45-50k a year, but since we’re live-in providers, that’s not taxable. So we make $0 in taxable income. At first, because of a mistake by a representative who told me I qualified for Covered California, I was put on Anthem Blue Cross. But then, six months later… CC called and started interrogating me about my income.

I reminded this new rep I was a live-in provider and maybe that’s what the genesis of this discrepancy is. She then proceeded to say she was cancelling my anthem plan and putting me on Medi-Cal because again… I MAKE 0 IN TAXABLE INCOME.

A week later, I get a call from the county medi-cal office demanding a send my pay stubs. I told her, it shouldn’t matter. My (taxable) income is $0. I got into a semi-heated argument with her about this, she insisted that she needed the paystubs and she would throw out my case if I didn’t send them to her. So I did.

A month later, I called medi-cal and asked about the status of my case. Denied. Guess why? “I make too much.” Apparently she refused to listen to details and put that Im not a live-in provider or some bullshit. Now I’m back to square one.

I’m worried my anthem plan will soon be canceled because of this worker’s mistake (or possibly malice) and I’ll be left without insurance until Medi-Cal gets its head out of its ass… anyone here put up with something like this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
