Looking for Expat (Mexico) + USA Coverage

Hey all. I currently have a pretty good healthcare plan through my former employer that, thanks to Cobra, I can have and continue to pay out of pocket premiums through the middle of next year. It provides solid USA coverage and will reimburse me for international care. Unfortunately, it’s costing me about $500/month.

I’d like to get the cost down considerably. I’m poking around, and I was chatting with a financial advisor that suggested I look at Obamacare, since I’m still a USA resident, have state residency, and pay state taxes; he believes I would be eligible. I’m considering going down this road for USA coverage, and getting a private plan in Mexico (since Obamacare offers no international coverage as far as I can tell). I have to check into what sort of coverage I’ll get with Obamacare, but it might get the cost down dramatically.

My primary reason for healthcare at this point is in the event of an emergency, I’ll want to be able to access and afford the top tier private system in Mexico. Additionally, if it’s something that’s a pre-existing condition or I’ll simply feel more comfortable with treatment in the USA, I’ll want the option to have treatment back in the states.

Does this sound like a good idea? Anything else I might want to consider?
