Just got letter stating COBRA coverage ended 8/31 – what do I do?

I'll try and keep this short and really just need to know what to do in the short term to make sure my family is protected.

I left my job in mid July this year and elected to maintain coverage through COBRA. I made a payment to them that covered through the end of August and set up automatic payments through the system with Alight, which is the company who manages this for my former employer.

In early September, they withdrew the next payment, PLUS what I had already paid them, so they overcharged me by approximately $3,500. Efforts to get this corrected were fruitless so I ended up filing a dispute with the bank. The bank ended up refunding the amount to me and I switched off the automatic deductions so they could just send me a bill to pay.

The next bill I received from them showed that I had a credit and owed nothing. I figured the system was behind and that I would get a corrected invoice at some point so it would be correct moving forward.

Well out of the blue today, I get five pieces of mail to myself, my wife and my three children stating that our coverage was ended on August 31st due to lack of payment.

I immediately called and the first rep couldn't even pull up my information because she stated my coverage was terminated. She asked for my info so they could call me back, but I asked to speak to a supervisor and have been on hold for the last hour.

What do I do if they can't resolve this today? How can I be assured my family has protection in the meantime?

And I have all the records showing that I paid, the mistake the made, etc. I am 54, from Pennsylvania. My income is in flux due to being between jobs. I consider myself semi-retired.
