Insurance reimbursed me by check, question regarding 1099-SA

I received my 1099-SA from my HSA provider and have a gross distribution of $4,000 for 2022. That is correct, but I had some weirdness with my insurance reimbursing me for a bill. In August 2022 I had received treatment from a provider that screwed up my insurance information. After months of back and forth with the provider I was finally told by the provider and my insurance to just pay the bill directly out of pocket using my HSA, even though I had already hit my out of pocket max. My insurance said that since I had hit my out of pocket max, they would send me a check in the mail to cover the cost. I paid the bill, but never received a check in 2022. Just after the start of 2023, I finally received a check in the mail for $1,500.

My question is, should I still enter the gross distribution of $4,000 as specified when I submit my tax return this year since I technically only had $2,500 of costs not covered by insurance? I also feel like this is going to get flagged as over-funding my HSA for depositing the $1,500 check, since I already max out my HSA through payroll contributions and this will look like I added another $1,500 on top of the max contribution.

Thanks in advance for any help!
