Insurance didn’t kick in but was seen by a doctor

Hello! I don’t have a lot experience with medical insurances (long story, was basically raised by a cult) and I just got one through my job. I was under impression that it already kicked in as my insurance card arrived about a month ago.

So I went to a doc this morning to finally get help for my anxiety and depression. They took my card, charged a co-pay and I went to see a doc. She prescribed some meds, but they’ve been pending at Walgreens all day, and the status read “insurance pending”, so I grew suspicious. Went to check my medical plan via ADP – and the insurance kicks in on 7/1…. I’m really upset cause I simply don’t have extra money right now to pay out of pocket for a visit that I thought was covered. Why didn’t the receptionist tell me the insurance isn’t active yet? I know it’s my responsibility to know this but still…

Is there anything I can do here to hold them accountable for the oversight? It says on the back of my Cigna card that they should’ve contacted Cigna to pre-approve services but it looks like they didn’t. What do I do?
