Important CT Scan Pre-Authorization Denied, VA

Hi all,

I had a CT scan scheduled this week for suspected tumor in my adrenal gland (could be cancerous or benign). The day of the scan, my appointment got cancelled because my insurance denied pre-authorization. I reached out to the insurance and was redirected to eviCore, who is responsible for this denial.

I was told that the reason for the denial was because they require a specific ultrasound to be performed before ordering a CT scan. However, I already HAD that ultrasound a few months prior, ordered by a different physician than the one that ordered the CT scan. After making calls all day, I was able to get them the paperwork showing that the ultrasound had been performed and now I’m in the appeal process, which I’ve heard can take a while.

Obviously this is giving me an insane amount of anxiety, because I really need to this CT scan and it’s being denied for a bullshit reason. I have no problem just paying out-of-pocket for something like this to speed the process up, but it seems radiology centers require insurance?

What are my options other than just waiting for my insurance to take their sweet time and let a possible cancer get worse and worse? Should I go to the ER and demand a CT? Lawsuit? Make a ton of noise?
