[Illinois] Employer saying our Civil Union does not qualify partner for health insurance.

[Illinois] Employer saying our Civil Union does not qualify partner for health insurance.

We have a Civil Union, which has some pretty generous protections here in Illinois. https://idoi.illinois.gov/content/dam/soi/en/web/insurance/companies/documents/Civil-Union-FAQ-Sheet.pdf

They are saying it does not qualify under a Marriage, which seems to be a direct contradiction of Illinois law.

Employer wants us to go through the Domestic Partnership route, which is just a notarized affidavit and treats the Civil Union as if it does not exist.

I’d like to avoid additional paperwork steps after going through the entire Civil Union process. We had to go to the courthouse FOUR times to get this done and we’re proud of it.

I’m also worried they might deny coverage in the future stating the paperwork was not properly filled out and then our 60 day window has passed.

They keep saying they’re going by federal law instead of Illinois law. In the chance it makes a difference, the Blue Cross Blue Shield policy is from Minnesota. Does that perhaps allow them to follow Minnesota law instead of Illinois?
