If you are going through marketplace for insurance DO NOT sign up for Bright Healthcare

Bright Healthcare is abhorrent. DO NOT use them under any circumstances. They have pulled out of 6 marketplaces this year, and have cut their staff immensely.

This has been my first experience with insurance in 4 years, since I was kicked off my parents plan. I called in July to get a list of in network providers for my yearly preventative care visit. I scheduled a visit with one of the doctors on the list and called Bright Healthcare to confirm the visit was covered. To my surprise I got a bill from the doctors office for over $600 stating my insurance claimed I was not covered by insurance on the date of service.

After calling the Bright Healthcare, they confirmed this was a filing made in error on their part and they were appealing the case. I have called back repeatedly at least twice a month since August 1st to check on the status. Every time I am told that they are/have escalated the claim to the highest extent and that a representative assigned to my case will call me in 24 to 48 hours. I have NEVER once received a call from them, I have no proof that it has ever been escalated as they can not copy me on any emails and apparently the Representative team does not have the phone number for the Special Services team who handles the resolution of claims. The excuse they give me every time is that many of their customers are experiencing the same issue.

At this point the bill has been sent to collections, as I would have never scheduled the doctors appointment had I known I would need to be on the hook for the bill. And I do not have the finances for a bill that high. I have spent 4 hours on the phone with them today and finally was able to talk to the highest supervisor available on the Representative team, and he says the only thing he can do is wait for the person he emailed to email him back with a status update. There has been no indication of a timeline as to when this will be resolved in the almost 5 months I have been attempting to contact them. At this point I can only assume they don’t plan to ever pay it. I will be taking it to small claims court after today.

DO NOT USE THEM. THEY WILL SCAM YOU. This wasn’t even extra coverage. It was the one basic doctor’s appointment you are supposed to get a year. They will happily take your money and never pay out even for the most basic agreed upon care. Their system and process in how they handle issues is asinine and overly complicated. They don’t even seem to have the ability to contact each other. It is worth paying extra, or having a higher deductible to avoid the headache this health insurance company will surely give you.
