How long do I have to provide insurance information to an ER doctor after a visit?
I had to take my son to the ER about a week ago. I verified at that time that the hospital had my current private health insurance information. The doctor that saw my son that day just sent me a bill directly without trying to go through my insurance. When I called their billing department they told me they didn't have my insurance on file (I know they had it in the past and it hasn't changed since then) and they wanted me to give them my information again. I said that the hospital has it and they should get it from them. They refused and told me I'll need to call back with the information. I told them that I'm not comfortable sharing that information over the phone and that they could send me a form in the mail and I would return it and they refused that option too.
How long do I have to provide that information to their billing department? Are there any laws dictating that period? The cards that my insurance provided are THE lowest quality cards I've ever seen. They're worse than paper and the lettering on the plastic cards literally slides off the card. So how long do I have before they are likely to process my account as not paid?
