Hospital asking for payment – Insurance companies refiled claim?

Hello all! Unusual one for you here, based out of Georgia. Wife and I have two boys, 2.5 years old, and 7 months old.

Recently, within two weeks of each other, we received two separate bills from the hospital where our children were born. One bill for each of the children. One for $1500 (2.5 years ago) and one for $500 (7 months ago), apparently related to their birth based on the line items of nursery etc…

Wife called the hospital today, and was told that the insurance companies refiled the claims due to overpayment on their part, and the balance remaining is ours to pay. Mind you, the $1500 bill was one insurance company (Aetna, 2.5 years ago), and the $500 bill was a completely different insurance company (United Healthcare, 7 months ago, still our active insurance). They both decided to audit and refile claims, around the same time, against the same hospital?

Anyway, from what I can read online, and my non-legal brain, for Georgia (O.C.G.A. ยง 33-20A-62), it would seem that anything beyond 18mos is no longer fair game for the hospital or the insurance company. Can anyone offer any insight on this? A surprise total billing of 2k is not a small thing to us.

Thank you in advance!
