Help with old insurance paying for something after effective date of change?

Hi all,

My wife and I got married earlier this year, and she switched to my medical insurance. We didn’t submit the insurance changes until about three weeks after our marriage. She gets a specialty medication once a month that she has to take on time or it can have negative effects, which is why we waited a few weeks to make sure that there was no delay in her receiving this medication (she was due to receive it the week after our marriage).

We just got a bill recently from her old insurance for several thousand dollars. It was for this specialty medication, saying that their coverage with her ended on our wedding date. Our new insurance also has that as the effective date with coverage for her. We did not realize that would be the effective date, otherwise we would have made the switch sooner.

We were thinking we should contact the pharmacy and ask them to rebill it to her new insurance. The problem is that pharmacy apparently doesn’t work with that insurance company for specialty medication. We just got this bill today and both the pharmacy and the new insurance are closed for Labor Day, so we cannot speak to customer service. I just want to ask if we are on the right track here, or what other options can we pursue? She only would pay a $5 copay for this specialty medication each month, so obviously is having to just bite the bullet and pay thousands of dollars to her old insurance would really hurt us.

I hope that is enough info, if not, I can try to provide more. Thank you for any help!!
