HELP: my insurance incorrectly told me I had a $20 copay for mental health services, turns out they were looking at the wrong insurance plan and now I have a hefty bill. What can I do?

Hi!

For background I was seeking out talk therapy in my area and I called my insurance company to see what the cost would be. I was told over the phone that I had a $20.00 copay for outpatient mental health services and the provider I wanted to see was in network.

Fast forward a couple months later and I get a bill for $750.00 for 4 sessions. Therapy company says they already billed it through insurance. I call my insurance back and she said “I see when you called, she told you it was a $20.00 copay but she was accidentally looking at the wrong insurance plan, not yours.” My insurance plan will not cover mental health services until after my hefty deductible is paid, so right now I’m on the hook for the entire cost of each session out of pocket. She went on to say that because every phone call to the insurance company starts with a disclaimer that coverage is not guaranteed and is subject to change, that nothing can be done about it.

Is there any recourse that I have since I would not have gone to therapy if I knew it wasn’t covered? I was under the impression I would’ve owed $80.00 total for the sessions I had been to.

Thank you for your help.
