HELP!! My Health Insurance is Confusing
Hi reddit. I’m going to admit that health insurance is very confusing to me. I’ve been on my dad’s insurance plan my whole life, and his health insurance was good. Never had any issues with it, just showed up to doctor’s appts with my insurance card and it was covered. Recently he switched jobs so we have new health insurance, and it has been a PAIN. For whatever reason when doctor’s enter our insurance information it does not show up in their system. I went to an appointment yesterday at a new doctor, and they told me it showed as “inactive”.
When I reached out to our insurance this was their response: “Please be sure any providers are calling us or going to our website in order to confirm eligibility. If they try to use the automated system, it will most likely show incorrect information since we are a 3rd party and file the information in a separate system”. So providers are required to call every time they need to verify my eligibility/benefits? Also when I’ve called them I either have to wait forever or leave a VM. I know doctor’s offices are already busy, so I doubt they want to sit on the phone for an hour to confirm my benefits. Also the website option would make the provider have to create a whole account on their website to access my benefits which seems odd.
I just feel like this is a lot of work for the doctor’s office? My insurance is Cigna, but from my understanding they have a 3rd party helping called Heritage Consultants who is the contact I reach out to with questions. Am I making this more complicated than it should be???
