Health coverage for our first child: My wife has Medicare, and I am self-employed.

Hello,

First, I want to thank anyone in advance who can provide understanding, direction, or offer suggestions. I generally consider myself a somewhat intelligent person, but when it comes to understanding health insurance, it feels impossible.

My wife and I are expecting our first child in a couple of months. I thought my infant would have some grace coverage for a short period with my wife’s insurance (Medicare insurance), but that is not the case from what I understand.

I left a corporate job a year ago where I had coverage, but I am currently self-employed and do not have personal coverage. (Getting insurance for myself is next on my to-do list.)

So the situation is:

My wife and I are expecting our first baby in 2 months. (We are both 36, if that matters.) I am self-employed with no personal health insurance. (Income of about 80K year) My wife has Medicare Insurance (Yes, I’m sure it’s Medicare and not Medicaid.) I know nothing about health insurance. I want information and direction from someone not actively trying to sell me.

What suggestions do you have, or what direction can you point me in? I want to make sure my child has proper coverage.

Thanks so much!
