HDHP and Humira – United Healthcare
Hi there!
Open enrollment is this week, and I’m thinking of switching from the 500 deductible plan to the HDHP with HSA. I take Humira biweekly– I get it delivered for $5 every month through Optum Pharmacy using the Copayment Assistance Program.
My thought is that now that I’ve gotten most of the office visits done with to actually get the Humira prescribed (it took about 3-4 visits to my rheumatologist), because I’m in otherwise good health I can switch to a lower premium plan and take advantage of the HSA.
My concern is, though, that Humira might not be covered the same way under the HDHP. I can’t find what “tier” UHC considers Humira, it only says “M” for the tier in their drug list.
Ideally, I’d like to switch to the HDHP, remove my savings card from Optum, and then use Complete Rebate instead to cover the deductible on my plan. Currently the savings card only applies about $50 to my deductible. I already pay about 4k pretax in premiums a year, so my goal is to get as much of that into an HSA where I can save/spend as I need rather than just paying the insurance company for coverage.
Does anyone have any experience switching from a low deductible plan to an HDHP while on Humira (or similar drug with copayment assistance/rebate programs)? I’m just looking for some crowd sourced reassurance that I’m not making a mistake.
