Having two health insurances ruined my life

Age: 25

Yes I know the title is dramatic but hear me out.

I have two health insurances.

So a year ago I signed up for my works health insurance with a high deductible plan. I am covered under my parents health insurance too as I am under 26. My parents health insurance is a PPO plan that doesn’t ever cost us very much for doctor visits.

I enrolled in my work’s health plan as a backup plan for if I couldn’t use my parents health insurance. I learned this the hard way that you have to use your work insurance as your primary insurance even if your parents secondary insurance has better benefits.

For example a MRI on my works insurance costs $1200 but with my parents insurance it costs $300

So my issue:

My “secondary” insurance (my parents) is refusing to pay any of my bills now and is forcing my primary work insurance to pay all of it. Even when my primary insurance is sending the explanation of benefits to my secondary insurance. Which is causing me to pay a lot of money in the thousands.

I don’t agree with this. I know I made a mistake.

But I shouldn’t be paying for an additional insurance premium every month, just so that I would have to pay more for my Doctor visits and treatments, that makes absolutely no sense at all.

If I just kept my parents health insurance and never got my works health insurance then I would’ve only owed $300 instead of $1200

Does anyone have any experience with this? Any suggestions?

I feel so strongly about this, I am willing to make it my life mission to see this situation is rectified and doesn’t happen to others. I’ll hire lawyers, write letters, whatever
